Jefferson Parish Forensic Center Millage Renewal
Election
Voter’s parish wide will be asked to consider renewing the existing property tax millage that funds the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office on Saturday, May 1, 2010. The millage renewal is NOT for a new tax increase.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office, under the direction of Dr. Robert E Treuting, has with careful planning brought the coroner’s office into the 21st century. In 1990, he undertook the building of a state of the art facility that now houses the everyday operations of the coroner’s office. This project was completed on time and on budget. The Jefferson Parish Forensic Center is located at 2018 8th Street in Harvey. This facility during and after Katrina remained functional for the metro region and performed humanitarian relief acts across the region.
Dr. Treuting, out of concern for the citizens of Jefferson has implemented programs that benefit this community. He assisted in creating the Mental Health Task Force to better assist the sheriff’s office, medical and legal community in addressing mental health problems. Training on how to best handle mental health patients is given to police officers. Through a grant he has implemented an adult rape advocate program to assist victims, as a neutral supporter, through this traumatic occurrence. Sexual Assault education and safety awareness for middle and high school is offered upon request. Staff members have received bereavement training to best serve those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one due to unexpected circumstances.
As Coroner of Jefferson Parish for 22 years, Dr. Treuting has achieved outstanding accomplishments. Under his administration the JPCO has earned accreditation from the National Association of Medical Examiner for Forensic Excellence in death investigation. There are only 7 other coroner’s offices to achieve this recognition throughout the nation.
The election on Saturday, May 1, is NOT a tax increase. It is a tax renewal for an additional 10 years at the same millage rate approved by voters in 1990 and 2000.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us better serve the people of Jefferson Parish.
